Can general pallets be used to place chemicals?

General pallets used for transportation and storage can be used to place chemicals. However, in principle, it is not recommended to use them for storing chemicals regularly or for long periods of time. This is because potential hazards may arise to the products, employees, and building areas. There are three main risks that should be considered as follows:

1. Risk of Corrosion (Chemical Reaction)

Wood Pallets:
If chemicals spill onto a wood pallet, the wood can absorb the chemicals. This can cause the pallet to deteriorate more quickly and may turn it into a flammable or toxic object that unknowingly accumulates in the warehouse.

Plastic Pallets:
Some types of plastic may react with certain chemicals, causing the plastic to become brittle, crack, or even melt when chemical spills occur.

2. Risk of Contamination

If a chemical leak occurs or spills onto other nearby products, it may cause damage to those items. In some cases, the impact may spread further and lead to more extensive damage.

3. Risk of Load Capacity

Chemical drums are usually very heavy. For example, a 200-liter drum. Over time, general pallets may not be able to support the weight, which can cause them to bend or break, increasing the risk of accidents.

Spill Pallet

The solution for chemical storage is to use pallets specifically designed for chemicals, or Spill Pallets, which are highly resistant to acids, alkalis, and harsh chemicals.

A key feature is the containment sump beneath the pallet, which can hold liquid if a chemical drum leaks. The leaked chemicals will flow into the sump instead of spilling onto the floor.

Additionally, the drain plug allows the collected chemicals to be safely drained for proper disposal.

Expert Tips :

For convenient handling and transportation, choose a pallet with forklift entry points, allowing chemical drums to be moved together with the pallet immediately without needing to remove the drums.
