What is hazardous waste, and how can it be safely managed?
Hazardous waste can be categorized into two main types based on their usage, as follows:
1) Household hazardous waste:
This includes products that contain chemical substances, such as toilet cleaners, insecticides, and electrical or electronic devices like old mobile phones and fluorescent light bulbs.
2) Industrial hazardous waste:
This includes leftover chemicals from manufacturing processes and toxic waste materials, such as used engine oil.
Improper disposal or management of hazardous waste can lead to serious consequences. For the environment, there is a high risk of toxic substances seeping into the soil and contaminating water sources. In terms of human health, exposure to toxins from hazardous waste can cause respiratory diseases, cancer, and skin problems in those who come into contact with or live near contaminated areas.
